Graduate Employee (GE) Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I apply for an open GE position?

All open Graduate Employee positions are posted on the Ballmer Institute website and the Graduate Studies website.

Can I apply for both GE positions and scholarships?

Yes. It is possible to get scholarships or additional stipends on top of your GE appointment. However, some scholarships stipulate that they cannot be combined with a GE appointment, so you’ll have to check with the requirements of each scholarship you wish to apply for. In addition, there might be tax implications for receiving both a scholarship and a GE position.

What is the timeline for the application and hiring process?

Academic departments make every effort to identify and post announcements in mid-February and early March for GE positions open for the next academic year.

  • February/March: Majority of GE positions for the following academic year are posted.
  • 10 days from posting date: Initial review begins.
  • Early April: Offers are made for most positions
  • April 15th: Students accept or decline offers by this date

Please note: GE positions in research units are posted and filled throughout the year as funding becomes available through grants and/or other sources. All position announcements are posted for 10 business days before initial review of applications begin.

What do I need to submit to apply for a GE position?

Please see the “How to Apply” section.

Is there a deadline for applications?

Open GE positions are posted on our website for a minimum of 10 business days before the committee’s review. Most search committees will begin their application review immediately after the 2-week period. In order to be assured consideration it is recommended that students apply within the first 10 business days of a position being posted. GE selection processes are quite competitive as these positions are in high demand. Once a position is filled it is removed from the Ballmer Institute website.

How do I know if a position has been filled?

Applicants are notified of the selection committee’s decisions within five working days after decisions are made. Most GE positions for the coming year are assigned by the end of Spring term. However, applications remain on file for the entire year and assignments may be made later, depending on need.

What are the salary rates and benefits provided with a GE?

Please consult the Graduate School for GE Salary and Benefit information.

Are there additional supports/funds for minority students?

Yes. The Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE) works with Diversity Excellence Scholars (DES). Eligibility for the DES is open to any incoming or currently enrolled UO students. The CMAE also has advisors who can work with you as you navigate campus culture and resources.

Do I have to live in Portland to be a Graduate Employee with the Ballmer Institute?

Preference will be given to Portland-area GEs as our program is located on the Portland Campus.
